More Movies That Rock
Today's episode of Sounds of Cinema featured music from movies that rock: rock and roll movie musicals and pictures in which rock music figures into the film. Here are some trailers and musical performances from the pictures that weren't mentioned on today's show:
Blue HawaiiThis was Elvis Presley's most successful film.
Cradle of Fear
Metal band Cradle of Filth participated in a movie. Here is the music video for "Scorched Earth Erotica," which features clips from the film.
The Doors
This biopic of Jim Morrison is one of the purest examples of the Hollywood rags-to-riches-to-drugs-to-dead formula.
Help!
One of the essential examples of a rock band making a film less as an artistic statement and more as a way of increasing its fame and marketability.
Hustle & Flow
Although technically a hip-hop film as opposed to a rock picture, Hustle & Flow has a rebellious spirit that is much more rock and roll than any number of 1980s hair metal bands.
More American Graffiti
This sequel to the 1973 original is a mess but it is interesting to watch as a curiosity.
Pirate Radio
Although highly fictionalized, this tale about the origins of rock and roll radio in the U.K. is a lot of fun. It was released internationally with the title The Boat that Rocked.
Queen of the Damned
Rock of Ages gave us a sense of what Tom Cruise's Lestat would have been like if he were cast in this film. Queen of the Damned went ahead without Cruise's involvement, in which the vampire becomes a rock star.
Rocky IV
The guilty pleasure entry of the series, Rocky IV is essentially a 90 minute music video.
Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny
This parody of rock musicals is amusing and has some notable cameos including Meatloaf as Jack Black's father.
Tommy
Released the same year as The Rocky Horror Picture Show, director Ken Russell and The Who made one of the legendary rock musicals.
Top Gun
Like American Graffiti, the film features rock and roll music on the soundtrack that is integral to the film.
Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story
A parody of Walk the Line, the film has a great performance by John C. Reilly
The Wall
There hasn't been a subsequent feature film quite like The Wall, which is a loss both to film and to popular music.
